Operator's License
You can renew your Rhode Island driver's license online with a credit card, at any DMV branch location or at a AAA branch office (members only).
- To renew your Rhode Island driver's license bring your current license and the License/ID/Permit Application. If your current license is lost, refer the third page of the License/ID/Permit Application for a list of acceptable documents.
- Licenses are valid for a maximum of five years. If you are 75 years of age or older, your license will be valid for two years.
- If you have not received your permanent driver's license and it has been over 45 days from obtaining a temporary one please call (401) 462-5862 to inquire if the license has been returned to the DMV Cranston headquarters.

Visa Status Applicants: Must bring all current Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) documents when applying for a license, license renewal, duplicate license or a Rhode Island Identification Card.
Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
- Renewals are done at the DMV Cranston headquarters only.
- To renew your Rhode Island CDL bring your current CDL and your renewal form. If you did not receive a renewal form in the mail, bring your current CDL.
- You must comply 60 days in advance with all HazMat regulations.
- Licenses are valid for a maximum of five years. If you are 70 years of age or older, your license will be valid for two years.
- Licenses that have been expired for one year or more cannot be renewed. You will be required to take all written endorsement exams, obtain a commercial driver's permit and complete a successful road test.
- You will be issued a temporary license valid for 60 days. The actual license will be mailed to you.

Medical Examiners Certificate: As of 1/30/2012, all CDL customers will be required to show their Medical Examiners Certificate for all transactons.
