Driver Retraining

The Driver Retraining Department is located within the Adjudication Office on the 3rd floor of the Cranston Headquarters of the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles.

The Driver Retraining Department coordinates court imposed educational programs, in addition to collecting registration fees and associated documents for these programs. Driver Retraining programs consist of the Alcohol Education Program, Defensive Driving Program, The Colin Foote Program, Alcohol Treatment, and Public Community service. Other than the Alcohol Treatment and Public Community Service, all programs are held at the Community College of Rhode Island. Registration information will be mailed to you within four (4) weeks following your court date. If your educational program is the result of an out-of-state conviction, you must respond to the Driver Retraining Office with your paperwork from the out-of-state court. 

Driver Retraining information, payments, and completed requirements will be accepted in conjunction with your Driver Retraining or Adjudication Office appointment.  Payments and court ordered requirements can also be submitted through the mail.  Please go to https://ridmvreservations.ri.gov/ to make a reservation. Alcohol Program/DUI/Refusal

The Driver Retraining Department is responsible for any court sanctioned program that falls within RIGL 31-27-2, RIGL 31-27-2.1 and its subsections which include the First Offender Alcohol Education Program, Alcohol Counseling/Treatment/Substance Abuse, and public community service associated with RIGL 31-27-2, RIGL 31-27-2.1 and subsections.

The program is 12-18 hours. The fee is $350.00. The program is held at CCRI. The fee is paid at the DMV, 600 New London Avenue in Cranston. When you have paid the fee, you are registered for the program. YOU CANNOT REGISTER AT CCRI.

DDC/Defensive Driving

Due to COVID-19, all Driver Retraining payments will be done by appointment only or paid through the mail. Please go to https://ridmvreservations.ri.gov/ to make a reservation. If you chose to mail the payment, please mail to the following:

The Defensive Driving course is a six (6) hour program and cost $165.00. A registration packet will be mailed to you upon being sanctioned by the court of jurisdiction. The Defensive Driving program is held at either the Lincoln, or Warwick campus of the Community College of Rhode Island. To register for the program, you can either mail the registration form and fee to the Driver Retraining office, or you can make a reservation. The Driver Retraining office is located at the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles, 600 New London Ave Cranston, RI 02920. No walk-ins will be accepted until further notice.

Upon receiving your payment, The Community College of Rhode Island will mail out your schedule within when they resume classes. Currently, due to COVID-19, the Community College is not scheduling any classes. After paying for your class, additional time to complete the classes will be afforded to you. If your address has changed after you have registered for the program, please contact the Community College of Rhode Island at (401) 825-2401 and notify them of your address change. Please be advised that you cannot register for the program directly at the Community College of Rhode Island. Registration must be done through the Driver Retraining Office at the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles. No online programs will be accepted as a substitute for this program.

Multiple Moving Offenses - If you are convicted under this RIGL 31-27-24, "Anyone convicted of four separate moving violations within an 18-month period shall be sanctioned to 60 hours of education and 60 hours of public community service. Customers who are sanctioned to this program by the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal or any of the municipal courts will need to register with Driver Retraining. You will be contacted by mail with a registration packet. You can mail in the registration form with the fee or you can register in person in the Driver Retraining Department located within the DMV, 600 New London Avenue, Cranston, RI. The fee for this program is $850.00. YOU CANNOT REGISTER AT CCRI.

Public Community Service

Due to COVID-19, all Community Service letters will be accepted by appointment only, or it can be faxed. The fax number is (401) 462-0829. If you fax your letter, please make sure that your name, date of birth, and phone number is on the letter. Please go to https://ridmvreservations.ri.gov/ to make a reservation. When you have completed the public service please make sure the following information is on the letter:

  • Your letter must be on the letterhead of the non-profit organization and be the original,
  • We do not accept faxed documents,
  • Your letter must include your full name, spelled correctly, with your date of birth,
  • Your letter must indicate the number of hours you have completed,
  • Your letter must be signed by someone within the organization with the authority to do so.
