A vehicle that is considered 'salvage' is one that has been damaged, such as in an accident, and deemed salvage by an insurance company. These vehicles can be repaired and re-sold in certain circumstances. Salvage titles are usually printed in red ink to distinguish them from a regular title.
- Red Rhode Island salvage certificates stamped "Class B - Repairable" must be accompanied by a Salvage TR-5
(VIN Inspection form) issued by the Enforcement section of the Rhode Island DMV.
- Red Rhode Island salvage certificates stamped 'Class A - parts only' cannot be registered.
- Out of state titles stamped 'reconstructed' or 'rebuilt' can be registered with a police Salvage TR-5
(VIN Inspection form). The Rhode Island title will contain the words 'Reconstructed Salvage'.
- Out of state titles stamped 'salvage' must have a Salvage TR-5
issued by the Enforcement section of the Rhode Island DMV in order to be registered in Rhode Island.
- The Rhode Island title issued will be stamped 'Reconstructed Salvage' to indicate the vehicle was once a total loss but is now repaired, and this legend will be stamped on all future titles.
