Vanity Plates

A vanity plate for a passenger vehicle can be any combination of three (3) to six (6) letters or up to six (6) letters and numbers. See format for letters and numbers on vanity application in designer pdf and wavepdf styles.

For a motorcycle, it is any combination of five (5) letters and numbers that is not already registered to a passenger vehicle.

For a commercial vehicle, a vanity plate is any combination of five (5) letters and numbers that is not already registered to a passenger vehicle. Commercial plates with all digits are not considered vanity plates and cannot be ordered as vanity.

The DMV will screen your request for appropriateness. Any request deemed offensive will not be processed and the fee returned to the customer. The DMV reserves the right to recall any plate once issued to a customer if it is deemed offensive or inappropriate.

The fee to order a vanity plate is $67.50 for the Wave design, and $81.50 for the alternate Sailboat design. Bi-annual (two-year) renewal fees are as follows:

  • Sailboat

    You can order your current wave plate in this design for a fee of $46.50

  • Veteran

    Please be advised that the requirements for obtaining a Veteran (formerly War Veteran) plate has changed. The General Assembly passed legislation in 2006 changing the design and eligibility for the “War Veteran” plate. The legislation replaces the existing “War Veteran” plate with a “Veteran” plate and defines a “veteran” as any person who has served on active duty in the armed forces of the United States. The term "veteran" shall also include members of the National Guard and Reserves: (1) called to active duty authorized by the President of the United States or the Secretary of Defense; or (2) who have twenty (20) years of service with a letter and record of separation of service. There will be a sticker on the upper right corner designating the branch of service, or gold star parent.

    You must have been honorably or medically discharged from the United States Armed Forces in order to recieve these plates You will be required to show your discharge papers (DD-214 form) or other acceptable evidence or service during the dates below.

  • Purple Heart

    You must present either your DD-214 or other paperwork showing award of a Purple Heart.

    There is no fee to order this plate. In addition, yearly registration fees are also waived.

    Upon death of the holder of any Purple Heart plates, the plates may be transferred to the surviving spouse for the spouse's lifetime or until he/she remarries.

  • National Guard

    You must present a letter from your commanding officer stating that you are a member of the Rhode Island National Guard.

    There is a one-time fee of $21.50 to order this plate. Normal registration fees apply.
