IMPORTANT NOTICE
Customers will notice a change in fees for passenger vehicles based upon the weight of the vehicle. Vehicles over 4000 lbs will be charged at increased annual rates. This law pertains to those who possess the following plates: passenger, combination, commercial, motor homes, war veterans, and national guard.
Please note the following Rhode Island General Law related to the registration fee for motor vehicles has been amended by the RI Legislature - RIGL 31-6-1, Amount of Registration and Miscellanous Fees. Fees shown in the Law are based on an annual basis. Rhode Island registration is based on a two-year period. Take the annual fee, double it, and then add the $1.50 technology surcharge to determine your registration amount. For example: registration for a vehicle under 4000 lbs. is $30, double that amount ($60,) then add the surcharge fee ($1.50) to figure your registration amount ($61.50)
Please check your courtesy registration renewal notice for the registration fee amount.
IMPORTANT: Please check with your local city or town tax assessor to be certain that you do not owe any property taxes on your vehicle. The DMV cannot process a renewal that has outstanding property taxes owed. If you do owe tax to your city or town, you must first pay the tax and then have the tax assessor's office stamp your renewal form "Registration Approved."
Please note:
You must renew online or mail your renewal form and payment to the address on your renewal form. Your registration and stickers will be mailed to you. Please allow at least two weeks for this transaction.
If you do bring your renewal to a DMV branch, you will be directed to a drop-box set up for this purpose.
If you choose to mail your renewal, you must make sure that all areas of the form are filled out completely and that your insurance information is included.
September, October, November, and December registration renewals can no longer be processed on line. This transaction must be done as a re-registration, please complete a TR1 and bring it to any DMV.
