Out-of-State Leased Vehicle

If you are new to Rhode Island, you must register your vehicle within 30 days of becoming a resident. The DMV suggests you begin this process by applying for your Rhode Island driver's license.

  • If you are currently leasing your vehicle you must have a Power of Attornery form from your leasing company and we require a copy of the title or the original title.
  • You must have one proof of residency from this list.
  • Insurance is mandatory in Rhode Island. Your insurance company must be licensed to do business in Rhode Island and you must bring proof of insurance (your insurance card or policy) to the DMV.
  • You will need to have a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) check performed by your local police department.
  • Fill out a TR-1 application pdf completely. With your RI driver's license, the DMV clerks can notarize your signature.
