Preferred plates are requested through the Office of Governor, State House Room 222, 82 Smith Street, Providence, RI 02903. Phone: (401) 222-2080.
Please complete the Preferred Plate Request form and mail it to the Office of the Governor.
Preferred Plates are defined as: Passenger plates with 1 letter and 1-3 digits or 2 letters with 1-2 digits, Passenger plates with 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 digits, Commercial/Motorcycle plates with 1-4 digits, Combination plates with 1-4 digits, Suburban/Veteran's plates with 1-3 digits, and National Guard plates with 1-2 digits.
Wave Plate Design
The wave plate is the standard issue Rhode Island plate design. It features the light blue wave on a white background with dark blue numbers.
Sailboat Plate Design
The sailboat plate is an alternate Rhode Island plate design option. It features a gray sailboat on a white background with dark blue numbers.
