General Information
Traffic Rules
- Speed Limits - 65 m.p.h. maximum on interstate highways. Business and residential districts, 25 m.p.h.; elsewhere 50 m.p.h. during the day, 45 m.p.h. at night, or as posted.
- Seat belts are required for all operators and passengers. Secondary enforcement for those 13 and older. Primary enforcement for children 12 and under. Approved child restraint systems are required for children under age seven (7) years. Children between the ages of 7 through 12 as a passenger in any seating position shall be properly wearing a safety belt.
- School Buses - vehicles must stop for school buses on any public or private road or parking lot when bus operates its flashing red lights. Vehicles may proceed when lights stop flashing.
- Right Turn on Red - Permitted after a complete stop unless prohibited by sign.
Motorcycle Information
- Motorcycle endorsement required on driver's license. The DMV will convert a motorcycle license from another state to a first-time Rhode Island license. First license requires completion of a 10-hour motorcycle safety course, conducted by the RI Department of Education at the Community College of Rhode Island. Required equipment includes protective goggles or windscreen for the driver, safety helmet only required for the passenger, and one rear-view mirror.
- Motorcycles and mopeds must be registered with the DMV. Registration renewal fee is $27.50 for two years..
- Mopeds do not require a special license, but you must have a RI driver's license. Mopeds are not permitted on Interstate highways.
Chemical Test Law
- Rhode Island has an 'implied consent' law for both alcohol and narcotic drugs; breath, blood and other body fluids are authorized. The legal limit for DUI is .08. Refusal of a chemical test is punishable by fines and suspension of license. For more information contact the Governor's Office on Highway Safety.
Accident Reports
- Accidents involving personal injury or damage in excess of $500 must be reported to the DMV within 21 days. All accidents must be reported to State or local police immediately.

- The Division of Motor Vehicles in conjunction with the New England Organ Donor Bank allows you to register to be an organ donor when you renew or obtain a new license. Simply fill out the form and carry the Uniform Organ Donor card in your wallet. Be certain that your family is aware that you wish to be an organ donor.
