Rhode Island issues a non-driver identification card.

Rhode Island ID Requirements:

  • You must be a resident of Rhode Island.
  • You may not hold a valid license in Rhode Island or in any other state.
  • You must have an acceptable identity document from this list.
  • You must also have an acceptable signature document.
  • You must be able to prove residency by providing one of the documents on this list.
  • You must have a valid social security number or an acceptable denial letter (with an acceptable visa code).
  • The fee for a Rhode Island State ID is $16.50
  • No personal checks are accepted for payment for a RI Identification Card.

Please be advised that the Division of Motor Vehicles requires you to present your original, unlaminated Social Security card for all NEW license and ID card transactions. We will no longer require the presentation of a Social Security card for renewals of RI operator or CDL licenses or RI Identification Cards. In addition, anyone who was denied renewal based on a lack of SS card since 8/1/07 may apply for renewal even if the ID or license has expired.
