Operator's License
- You can renew your operator's license (driver's license) in any one of our branch offices during regular business hours.
- Your license is valid for a maximum of five (5) years. If you are 75 years of age or older, your license will only be valid for two (2) years.
- Licenses that have been expired for three years or more cannot be renewed. If your license has been expired for a period of three years or more, you will be required to take a written exam and a road test.
- Renewal fees are $31.50 for five years, and $9.50 for those 75 and over. You will be issued a temporary license valid for 60 days. Your actual license will be mailed to you.
- To renew your license, you need to appear in person at a DMV branch office. You should have your current license and renewal form. If you did not receive a renewal form in the mail, just bring your current license.
- To change or correct your address on your license at the time you are renewing, please bring proof of your new address.
Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
- Prior to coming in for a renewal, please comply (at least 60 days ahead) with all HazMat regulations.
- Your license is valid for a maximum of five (5) years. If you are 70 years of age or older, your license will only be valid for two (2) years.
- Licenses that have been expired for one year or more cannot be renewed. If your license has been expired for a period of one years or more, you will be required to take all written endorsement exams, obtain a commercial driver's permit and complete a successful road test for the class you would be testing for.
- Renewal fees are $51.50 for five years, and $21.50 for those 68 and over. You will be issued a temporary license valid for 60 days. Your actual license will be mailed to you.
- To renew your license, you need to appear in person at the Pawtucket DMV branch office. You should have your current license and renewal form. If you did not receive a renewal form in the mail, just bring your current license.
Please be advised that the Division of Motor Vehicles requires you to present your original, unlaminated Social Security card for all NEW license and ID card transactions. We will no longer require the presentation of a Social Security card for renewals of RI operator or CDL licenses or RI Identification Cards.

Organ Donation
The Division of Motor Vehicles in conjunction with the New England Organ Donor Bank allows you to register to be an organ donor when you renew or obtain a new license. Simply fill out the form and carry the Uniform Organ Donor card in your wallet. Be certain that your family is aware that you wish to be an organ donor. Voter Registration
If you are renewing your license and you will be 18 years old by the next election and a US Citizen, you can register to vote at the DMV's License section.
Selective Service
If you are between the ages of 18 - 25 and male, you must register for Selective Service. At the time your photo is taken, the DMV clerk will ask you a question regarding Selective Service in order to register you.
