Commercial (CDL) / Chauffeurs
- Tests for Commercial Driver Licenses (CDL) are given in the Pawtucket branch only.
- You must have a valid RI license for at least one year and be at least 21 years old.
- Written and road tests are required. You must pay an application fee of $11.50. There is also an $11.50 fee for each test taken.
- You will only be allowed to take one of each CDL exam per day. If you do not achieve a passing score on any exam, you must wait 5 business days before applying to re-take that portion of the exam.
- When you have passed the required written tests, you must obtain a permit. The permit fee is also $11.50.
- Road tests are given by and must be scheduled with the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI). To book an appointment please call the CCRI at 825-1146.
- There is a $51.50 fee for the road test. You must have in your possession your valid RI license and CDL permit. In addition, you must supply the proper class of vehicle for your road test, and this vehicle must be properly registered, inspected and insured.

Chauffeur
A license issued to drive a limousine, taxi, or small van carrying under 14 passengers is denoted as an "R" restriction on your regular operator's license. You are required to fill out a form listing your personal information, license information and three references. You must also obtain a criminal background check (BCI check) from your local police station. This form must be approved by the Operator Control divison.
The fee is $26.50 to add the restriction to your license.
